Alan Shearer's x-rated response to Ian Wright's jibe as Newcastle legend slams VAR 'howler'

Alan Shearer issued a tongue-in-cheek response to Ian Wright following the Arsenal legend's cheeky social media jibe after the victory over Newcastle United. The pundit duo watched Sunday's contest at St James' Park alongside one another in the Premier League Productions studio.

Eddie Howe's side made a flying start to the match, and Jacob Murphy almost opened the scoring after a minute but saw his effort crash back off the post. Arsenal rode out an early storm of pressure and soon took the lead, minutes after a VAR review overturned a penalty for the hosts.

Martin Odegaard opened the scoring from distance, and Nick Pope came to his side's rescue with several crucial stops before the break. Alexander Isak saw a header rebound off the post shortly after the restart, and the match was effectively settled by a Fabian Schar own-goal in the 71st minute.

Wright did not waste time following the full-time whistle to remind Shearer of the results, sharing a clip of his jubilant celebrations in the studio. Newcastle's all-time goalscorer responded in kind with a carefully chosen emoji, but the footage also showed Wright reflecting on an 'unbelievable result'.

The former Arsenal striker said: "To be honest Al, like I said it was a great game, especially the first goal. But, listening to people saying the experienced players not turning up in games, not done well since we got knocked out of Europe simply because of a few hiccupy results at a time of the season where they're being put under pressure, I think that kind of result, going to that St James' Park against a Newcastle side in the best form of the season, and beating them is an unbelievable result."

Shearer's post-match analysis focused upon the VAR review for Newcastle's penalty appeal, which Howe later admitted 'rocked' the hosts. The legendary number nine could not hide his anger at the process which took several minutes to conclude Bruno Guimaraes' shot had ricocheted off Jakub Kiwior's leg on to his arm.

Describing it as an 'absolute howler', Shearer said: "First of all, they work the corner really, really well. The referee has given the penalty, and then he's obviously been told to go to the screen. Michael Salisbury [the VAR] feels as if that has hit his leg first.

"I've looked at it six or seven times, and I can't tell you for certain that's his leg first. If it has taken the referee seven replays to look at, then it's not clear and obvious."
