Alan Shearer's Newcastle United verdict after vital victory over Wolves

Alan Shearer has praised Newcastle United for grinding out a 'deserved' home victory against Wolves. Chris Wood scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot to restore a 10-point cushion over the relegation zone for Eddie Howe's side.

The Magpies head coach made two changes for the televised Friday night encounter, with Bruno Guimaraes and Emil Krafth coming in for Javier Manquillo and the injured Joe Willock. The hosts dominated the first-half, and Wood's close-range effort was ruled out following a VAR offside call against Guimaraes.

Wolves improved following the restart, and the match's crucial moment came in the 70th minute when referee Peter Bankes pointed to the spot after Jose Sa brought Wood down. The January signing dusted himself down and fired home in front of the Gallowgate End to end a run of three straight defeats.

Newcastle legend Shearer admits it was 'not pretty' to watch, but believes Howe's side with worthy winners. The BBC Sport pundit had earlier questioned the host's 'energy' and 'drive', but praised Wood for delivering 'a bit of quality going forward'.

He posted: "Not pretty at times but a deserved 3 points."

One Newcastle fan replied: "There are characters in this team now Al & although not pretty, you’ve got to admit the levels Bruno brings is exciting for what’s to come! Love our club." Another supporter replied: "As they say in the classics, they don’t draw pictures in the score book. A vital win and 3 points which puts us 10 points clear of the bottom three."
