Alan Shearer's instant verdict on 'impressive' Newcastle United after Chelsea win

Alan Shearer has hailed Newcastle United for delivering 'another impressive' performance to secure a home victory over Chelsea. Joe Willock scored the only goal of the game to settle the contest at St James' Park on Saturday evening.

Chelsea arrived on Tyneside without a win in their last four Premier League fixtures, and six points adrift of the Magpies. Graham Potter's side setup to frustrate the hosts, with Newcastle controlling play without creating clearcut chances in the first half.

However, this resistance was broken just after the hour mark by Willock, who netted for his second match in a row. The former Arsenal loanee stepped on to the ball after Miguel Almiron's dribble, and emphatically guided beyond the dive of Edouard Mendy.

Potter made a host of attacking changes as the visitors were afforded seven minutes of added time to search for an equaliser. But Eddie Howe's side held on for another statement victory over a so-called 'Big Six' club, with the victory lifting them to within two points of champions Manchester City.

Shearer could not hide his delight after the full-time whistle, taking to social media to praise Newcastle yet again. The club's all-time goalscorer believes the Magpies made Chelsea look 'very average' throughout the contest.

Shearer wrote: "Get the f*** in @NUFC another very impressive performance, making Chelsea look very very average."
