Alan Shearer led mass Geordie admiration for new centre-back Dan Burn today after ‘the Blyth Botman’ helped steer Newcastle United to a clean sheet.
Centre-back Dan Burn, who signed from Brighton & Hove Albion in the transfer window, made his debut in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa at St James’ Park.
Despite Newcastle United losing both full-backs to injury, Blyth-born Burn and Fabian Schar kept Aston Villa's dangerous forwards at bay - other than an effort ruled offside by VAR - despite huge pressure in the second half.
During the battle to keep Villa out, Schar had to be bandaged after getting hit in the face, while Burn ended up holding a patch of Tyrone Mings’ shirt after tearing it off during a tussle.
Among a host of robust Newcastle performances, Burn stood out and was named Man of the Match. His effort and effectiveness prompted a tweet from one of his boyhood heroes, Alan Shearer.
Shearer tweeted: “Another 3 points for the Toon. GTFI!!!! MOTM Dan Burn. Well done big man.”
Former Newcastle midfielder Rob Lee added to the plaudits, tweeting: "Fantastic debut from Dan Burn deserved MOM."
Kieran Maguire, host of the Price of Football podcast, wrote: “Told You All. Big love to Big Dan from all at #BHAFC. He’s a great lad and always gave his best for us and will do the same for #NUFC.”
@DavidRaper09 said: “Overshadowed a bit with our other signings, but that was best centre half performance we have seen in a long time. Assured, organised and dealt with losing both fullbacks to injury. Some debut!”
