Alan Shearer highlights Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak situation after Southampton win

Alan Shearer says Eddie Howe is in a "really good situation" by having both Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak at his disposal.

Howe elected Alexander Isak to lead the line from the start against Southampton, but shuffled his pack with Newcastle trailing at half-time. Wilson replaced an underwhelming Anthony Gordon, while Isak shifted out to the left wing.

Wilson marked his appearance from the bench with a brace and inspired Newcastle to a 3-1 victory. The England international scored eight goals in seven games in April, which is the most netted in a calendar month by a Newcastle player in Premier League history.

Shearer believes Wilson "changed the game" against the Premier League's bottom-placed side, and that the rotation between Wilson and Isak is a positive dilemma.

Shearer told BBC Match of the Day 2: "Absolutely, he gave them exactly what they needed and they didn't have that in the first half, they didn't have that threat. It's a really good situation for Eddie Howe to have because he knows Callum Wilson better than anyone in terms of his injury record.

"So to have Isak with him as well so they can rotate. One plays one game, the next comes in for the other. He brought him on at half-time. It wasn't working with Gordon, he had a big chance and missed it.

"But then Wilson came on and Isak went out to the left hand side, and I think he's unplayable at times when he's out there. There's no doubt about it he [Wilson] changed the game. Very clever from Eddie again. Releasing that and bringing him on at half-time."
