Alan Shearer hails Newcastle character but blasts 'pathetic' VAR decision in Nottingham Forest win

Alan Shearer has summed up the thoughts of every Newcastle United supporter following their late 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest. The Magpies closed the gap to Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the race for Champions League football, while also restoring their gap to Liverpool in sixth.

Emmanuel Dennis gave Nottingham Forest the lead with a deft chip to capitalise on a rare Sven Botman mistake, before Alexander Isak restored parity on the brink of half-time. The Swedish international picked up where he left off against Wolves last weekend following his impressive display, notching a late winner from the spot to wrap up all three points.

The result could, and probably should, have been beyond any doubt with the Magpies in complete control. Substitute Elliot Anderson was denied his first Premier League goal of the season after a contentious VAR decision.

Sean Longstaff was adjudged to be offside in the build-up to Anderson's header, despite the ball hitting two Forest players in the build-up. There was a lengthy display while VAR and referee Paul Tierney came to a decision, with Newcastle supporters quick to point out it wasn't a 'clear and obvious error.'

Former Newcastle striker, Shearer, has hailed the performance of Isak for his man-of-the-match performance and good character to come from behind.

Shearer tweeted: "Isak MOM you f…. beauty. Magnificent. Came back from a pathetic stupid VAR decision. Great character."
