Alan Shearer has joked he will drive Harry Kane to Bayern Munich if the England captain decides to make a switch to the Bundesliga because the move will protect his Premier League goalscoring record.
Shearer scored a total of 260 Premier League goals during stints at Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle, while Kane has netted 213. And given he is just 29, it appears the only thing that will stop Kane from breaking Shearer's record is if he moves abroad.
Bayern are making a determined effort to sign Kane, who has also been linked with moves to Manchester United and Real Madrid, with former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel viewing him as the perfect replacement for Robert Lewandowski who joined Barcelona last year. Despite Tottenham's insistence that he is not for sale, Bayern are preparing a new £80m bid for Kane and believe he is ready to make the move to Germany.
Spurs rejected an initial £65m offer, but Bayern believe they can tempt Daniel Levy to sell his prized asset after he steadfastly refused to let him join a Premier League rival. And, while Shearer has joked he would like to see Kane in the Bundesliga, he does not believe the move will happen.
Writing for The Athletic, Shearer said: "If Harry wants to join Bayern, I'll drive his f****** car there myself; anything to protect my Premier League goalscoring record of 260 - Harry is on 213. In truth, any hope there is probably forlorn.
"Harry is nearly 30, but he looks after himself, he's steered clear of major injuries and he's perfectly capable of coming back to England in a couple of years' time and banging in enough goals to overtake me. Still, though. Give me the keys and a sat nav and off I'll go…"
Speaking back in March, Levy made it clear he was hopeful Kane would remain at Tottenham as he told the Cambridge Union, Levy claimed: "He can absolutely win a trophy at Spurs. But being a legend is also important. The fact that he's top scorer of Tottenham Hotspur – he's making history. I hope one day that there is a statue of Harry Kane outside our stadium.
"Am I happy we haven't won more than one trophy in the past 15 years? Absolutely not. But I also think we've had some fantastic times and been in the Champions League a number of times.
"Despite the fact I feel sick there's another club in north London [ Arsenal ] that's a bit higher than us at this moment in time, if I look back over the past five years, we've also been above them - so, it's what happens."
