Alan Shearer explains Man City confidence in Premier League title race with Arsenal

Premier League all-time leading goalscorer Alan Shearer and former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha believe the Blues have no worries about their position in the title race.

City secured all three points on their return to Premier League action away at Leeds on Wednesday, with a rare Rodri strike and an Erling Haaland brace enough to earn a 3-1 victory. However, Pep Guardiola's side still find themselves five points behind current table toppers Arsenal with a tough January schedule just around the corner.

However, speaking on Amazon Prime Video's live coverage of the match, Shearer said that City's past experiences and know-how could prove key in catching up to the Gunners.

"They’re a very good team and we knew they wouldn’t be fazed by the gap that was facing them before the game," Shearer said.

"They’ve had it before, they’ll close it down I’m sure they’ll have something to say about that. They’ve got to perform, score goals and do exactly what they did tonight. They’re not under pressure, they know exactly what they need to do and I think they’ll do it if they perform like that, with De Bruyne and with that guy [Haaland] up front, they’ve got an incredible chance."

Onuoha, who played for City between 2004 and 2012, highlighted City's knack for getting results when they need them, sometimes even when they aren't at full strength.

"I wouldn’t say necessarily it’s [January fixtures against Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United] going to be key, but they will approach it in the same way they have done in other seasons, where they realise the big moments come in the second half of the season.

"Today you saw the squad, or the starting 11, that they put out - there’s no Bernardo Silva, there’s no Aymeric Laporte, there’s no World Cup winner Julian Álvarez. They’ve got more people to come back in and the squad that they have, that’s when they put it to use. There’s no guarantee that they win all these games, but they have the mentality because for the seasons when they’ve won the Premier League, they’ve had to go to late 80, early 90 points to do it, taking no one for granted."
