Alan Power insists new St Mirren boss will be 'rubbing their hands' to work with current squad

Alan Power expects St Mirren to be inundated with manager applications in the wake of Jim Goodwin’s departure.

That’s because he feels the Buddies are a tasty proposition for any coach or manager on the hunt for a new club or a step up right now.

Despite losing Goodwin on the morning of Saturday’s match, the ten-man Saints rallied and fought back from one down to rescue a credible point against Livingston.

Power admits it was a whirlwind 24-hour period leading up to the game, with the timing of Goodwin’s departure far from ideal.

But he believes the character shown by his teammates in the face of adversity shows just why the Paisley club won’t be short of suitors as they begin the hunt to find Goodwin’s replacement.

Power told Express Sport: “It’s not been ideal for anyone involved with Jim leaving.

“It’s been difficult for everyone because of the run we were on and everything seemed to be going well, but that’s football.

“Listen, we sort of knew what was going on. We have been long enough in the game to know what was happening. I think it was tough for him as well.

“But he’s an ambitious man and it is something that he just couldn’t turn down.

“All the lads wished him all the best and I think it was something that was probably deserved.

“It’s a job now that a lot of people will be looking at. We are on a good run and we are in a strong position in the table.

“Anyone coming in will be rubbing their hands.

“We have got a good bunch of lads here. It’s quite desirable at the moment.

“I liked the result on Saturday because this is a tough place to go to at the best of times. A lot of things went against us, obviously, the manager left and we went a goal down.

“We got our way back into it, then had a man sent off but stayed in the game.

“So the boys have a lot to be proud of. We weren’t at our best but we showed good spirit to come back and come away with a draw.”

St Mirren will likely be doing everything they can to make sure they get a new man permanently in the dugout as soon as possible, with a top six spot and a place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals set to be decided over the next seven weeks.

While Power feels a quick appointment would be ideal, he has no problem with the current interim coaches Jamie Langfield, Allan McManus and Andy Webster continuing for as long as needed after their excellent first performance from the sidelines against the Lions.

Power said: “It is probably a case of the sooner the better.

“But Jamie and his staff did a really good job for us so if it doesn’t happen quickly we know we are in good hands.

“Everybody at St Mirren has been brilliant (since Goodwin’s departure). Langfield when he took the team, the fans, everyone.

“We stuck at it against Livingston and showed great team spirit. The fans were excellent and we dug out a point in the end.”
