Alan Hughes opens up about relationship with Mark Cagney and Aidan Cooney after Ireland AM exits

Alan Hughes is still good pals with his former co-hosts, Mark Cagney and Aidan Cooney, the Ireland AM legend has said.

In fact, Alan makes an effort to stay in touch with a number of his former colleagues in whatever way he can, RSVP Live reports.

Mark Cagney, Aidan Cooney and Alan Hughes once made up the original line-up of Ireland AM.

Now, Alan is the last one remaining on the Virgin Media breakfast show, after Aidan left in 2018 and Mark in 2019.

The stars have managed to keep in touch after they parted ways, though. Alan said: “Yes, especially Mark. Me and [Alan’s husband] Karl only had coffee with him and his wife Audrey two weeks ago. He’s doing great after suffering from a stroke last year.”

The TV favourite makes an effort to stay in touch with other former co-hosts too. He told RSVP Live: “I still see Karen Koster at work a lot because she hosts The Six O’Clock Show.

“It’s always lovely to catch up with Amanda Byram when she is home in Ireland. I’m still in touch with Maura Derrane and Claire Byrne brings her kids to the panto every year.”

Alan currently works on-screen alongside Tommy Bowe and Muireann O’Connell, with the trio making for an entertaining dynamic on the much-loved show.

The presenters often play pranks or have a laugh poking fun at each other. Just yesterday, Alan made the pair scream out loud on air after jumping up from behind the couch.

He said: “I’m having so much fun with Tommy and Muireann at the moment, and before Muireann came in, myself, Tommy and Karen Koster got on great."

“There is not one morning we don’t laugh - if it’s not on screen, you can bet we’re in stitches off screen.”

Aside from Ireland AM, Alan helps his husband, Karl Broderick, to produce their panto every Christmas. This year, Sammy and Buffy meet Snow White at the National Stadium.
