SCOTTISH actor Alan Cumming launched a scathing attack on the Tory leadership candidates on the BBC’s The Nine show.
Award-winning actor Cumming has been an outspoken supporter and campaigner in the movement for Scottish independence. He is currently touring his one-man dance show, Burn, a portrait of Robert Burns around Scotland.
He also stars in the documentary My Old School, on the subject of the Brandon Lee scandal, which will be released in the UK on Friday August 19.
When asked by presenters what he has made of the Tory leadership elections so far, Cumming replied: “I mean, what can you say? Both of them seem horrendous for Britain, let alone for Scotland.
“I think Liz Truss demeaning Nicola Sturgeon let alone any opinions on independence as another political leader in Britain is really shabby.
“This kind of shows the condescension and is really part of the overall problem of Westminster dismissing Scottish people, let alone the leader of the Scottish people.”
He concluded: “So I’m appalled by the Tories, just in general. Good luck to them. May the best right-wing mad person win.”
Cumming stated in an interview with The Telegraph earlier this year: “I sort of think about [Scottish independence] like the abortion thing in America, how it should be a woman’s right to self-determine what she does with her body – white men shouldn’t decide that.

“In the same way, Scotland should be able to make decisions about its future. That shouldn’t be decided by people who don’t care about it and have ulterior motives.”
Earlier this week, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak took to Perth for a Tory hustings that was widely protested by Scottish residents.
Speaking to Tory party members at the hustings, Sunak said he could not “imagine the circumstances” in which he would allow a second vote on Scottish independence if he becomes prime minister.
Meanwhile, Truss said: “If I am elected as prime minister, I will not allow another independence referendum.”
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon stated that she didn't watch the Perth hustings as "life is too short". She added: “From what I’ve seen, they had nothing to say that was of any relevance to the people of Scotland and, crucially, we’ve got to remember that if these two candidates stood in an election in Scotland, they wouldn’t win.
“I don’t think either of them will be a good Prime Minister, that’s my opinion, others may take a different view, but fundamentally, neither of them would win an election in Scotland.”
