Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow viewers call for return of Michael Barrymore

The latest edition of Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow had many viewers calling for a return of Michael Barrymore to our TV screens. The comedian's reboot of classic Saturday evening gameshow Strike It Lucky, on ITV this evening (Saturday July 2) had fans talking about its former host.

Strike It Lucky, which was also known as Michael Barrymore's Strike It Rich from 1996 to 1999, was a hit prime time British TV quiz show. It ran from October 29, 1986, through to August 23, 1999, and helped make its presenter's name in the entertainment business.

The much-loved show, based on the American game show Strike It Rich, is the latest among a host of classic British family game shows to get a 21st century reboot, with darts show Bullseye also getting a makeover in recent weeks. Tonight saw three teams-of-two competing once again to win big money and top-of-the range prize, including a holiday of a lifetime in Las Vegas.

In Strike It Lucky, three pairs of players must navigate their way across a sea of screens, trying to bank prizes and avoid the infamous hotspots along the way. Barrymore was a charismatic entertainer, known for his dry humour, eccentric dancing and physical comedy, and helped make the show such a hit with viewers.

It saw him voted the UK's favourite television star on several occasions, and become one of British television's highest-paid entertainers in the mid-90s. Barrymore's television career was effectively ended following the mysterious death of Stuart Lubbock in 2001.

The tragedy happened during party at the entertainer's then home in Essex, with Mr Lubbock's fatally injured body found floating in a swimming pool at the residence. No charges were ever brought against the presenter but it resulted in ITV axing him.

Viewers of tonight's reboot took to Twitter to express a range of opinions on the programme and its former presenter. Septimus McClonk, @clm2071, wrote: "Alan Carr achieving the hitherto impossible in making people wish for the return of Michael Barrymore."

"Let’s be honest, Strike It Lucky should only be done with Michael Barrymore," added Lucy, @lucys_portraits." Danny Denay, @DannyDenay said: "I like Alan Carr, but bring back Michael Barrymore!"

Ryan, @MonaghanCalum also shared his views on Twitter. He wrote: "I preferred it when Michael Barrymore did Strike It Lucky." Mark Blackman, @markblackman added: "Sorry Alan...only Michael Barrymore can present Strike It Lucky. Come on TV producers and directors, let's get Michael back on our telly - a true entertainer."
