Alabama Suspends Freshman DB Tony Mitchell After Arrest

Days after his reported arrest for marijuana possession with intent to sell or deliver, Alabama freshman defensive back Tony Mitchell has been suspended from all team activities, coach Nick Saban told reporters Monday.

Mitchell, who was an Under Armour All-American, was arrested Wednesday in Holmes County, Fla. In a press release, the county’s sheriff’s office reported finding a “significant amount of marijuana, a set of scales, a loaded handgun between the passenger seat and center console, and a large amount of cash,” according to AL.com’s Mike Rodak.

Saban said Monday that Mitchell would remain away from the team while the school gathered more information on the matter.

“Everybody’s got an opportunity to make choices and decisions. There’s no such thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Saban said. “You’ve got to be responsible for who you’re with, who you’re around and what you do, who you associate yourself with and the situations that you put yourself in. It is what it is, but there is cause and effect when you make choices and decisions that put you in bad situations.”

Mitchell committed to Alabama last spring over rival schools Auburn, Georgia and Texas A&M, signing his letter of intent in December. The Crimson Tide opened spring practice Monday, and will have 13 more practices before their spring game on April 22.
