An Alabama man, Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, 26, has been arrested for his involvement in the detonation of an explosive device outside the office of state Attorney General Steve Marshall in February. Calvert faces charges of malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device.
The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. on Feb. 24 when an explosive device went off outside Marshall's office in Montgomery. Marshall expressed relief upon Calvert's arrest, stating that it was not a random act of violence.
Authorities discovered that the explosive device used commercially available pyrotechnic fireworks as the main charge, a coffee can as a concealment container, and was enhanced with added fragmentation and ignitable liquids. The device also contained metal screws, nails, and other hardware for enhanced fragmentation effect.
Surveillance footage captured a man walking on a sidewalk shortly after the detonation, but investigators have not disclosed a motive for the incident. Charging documents revealed that Calvert placed stickers on state buildings advocating for various political ideologies, including phrases supporting the far-left militant movement known as Antifa.
Calvert could face up to 20 years in prison for his actions. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and federal partners played a crucial role in the investigation and arrest of the offender.
