A 26-year-old man from Alabama, Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, was arrested on Wednesday after being indicted on federal charges related to the detonation of an explosive device outside the state attorney general’s office in February. The charges include malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device, as stated in a news release from the US Department of Justice.
The incident occurred in Montgomery on February 24, where an explosive device was detonated outside the office of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the explosion. Marshall expressed relief upon Calvert's arrest, emphasizing that the act was not a random act of violence.
Calvert appeared in court on Wednesday and was provided counsel from the federal defender’s office. US Attorney General Merrick Garland condemned the act of violence, stating that the Justice Department has zero tolerance for such actions targeting public servants.
If convicted, Calvert could face a sentence ranging from five to 20 years in prison, according to the Justice Department. The case details were unsealed by the US District Court for the Middle District of Alabama on Wednesday.
