Ajax warn Manchester United: ‘We are very busy doing everything possible to keep Erik ten Hag’

Manchester United have been warned not to get ahead of themselves in their pursuit of Erik ten Hag after Ajax insisted they had not given up hope of keeping their manager.

The Dutchman is reportedly on the verge of sealing a deal to become the Red Devils’ boss from the summer, although Gerry Hamstra, the technical manager of the Amsterdam giants, has suggested that Ajax are not giving up hope.

“There is interest for Erik ten Hag, that is normal - he has done fantastic,” Hamstra said on Sunday.

“We hope he stays ... We did everything possible [to keep him]. We were very busy with that.

“He reacted that he is focusing on Ajax now. Now we are preparing for two scenarios, Ten Hag might stay or might leave.”

Ten Hag’s Ajax lost the KNVB Cup final on the weekend as PSV Eindhoven came from a goal down to win in Rotterdam, and the club are ready to move on from the coach if he decides to leave.

“Erik can ultimately determine his own future, he is old and wise enough for that,” Hamstra noted.

“We have two scenarios: we really hope he stays, it makes sense that there is interest in him. And if he doesn't stay, we have to be ready for the second scenario."
