Airdrie players 'gutted' after Scottish Cup exit as star weighs in on Partick Thistle red card debate

Airdrie attacker Jordan Allan says the Diamonds were left lamenting the chance that never was in their Scottish Cup fourth round exit to Partick Thistle.

Brian Graham's goal in the first half saw the Jags into the next round with a 1-0 victory, where they will face Dundee United.

Ian Murray's Diamonds pressed for a leveller and thought they had an advantage when Thistle centre-back Tunji Akinola was controversially sent off for a last-man challenge on Allan.

Now their attentions turn to promotion from League One to the Championship, currently sitting second after a run of five straight wins in the division.

Allan says Airdrie have to put their focus on a Lanarkshire derby against Clyde on Tuesday: "The boys are gutted. We put everything into the game but we just couldn't put the ball in the net.

"I can't fault the boys as we put a lot in so it's a hard one to take. We did everything we could. It's a tough one to take and we now have to put our heads back on the league.

"We now need to move on to league action on Tuesday. Sometimes you need something to drop for you in the six-yard box. Somebody to shoot and the ball drops for you.

"But it's one of them where nothing comes and you are left waiting and waiting. But the chance never came."

Akinola's red card certainly sparked fury from the Thistle camp and manager Ian McCall has already confirmed they intend to appeal.

While coy on whether it was a dismissal or not, Allan says he put referee David Munro in the position where he had to make a big call.

He added: "I'm not the ref but I did put him in the position. I am not going to comment on that but the ball is put in behind, there's a clash, and he's the last man."
