Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe says his side must make more of their chances, despite going top of League One with a 2-0 win over Alloa.
Goals in each half from Gabby McGill and Calum Gallagher gave the Diamonds all three points, but McCabe says Murray Johnson made a top save to prevent veteran striker Conor Sammon from levelling for the Wasps.
And he says on another day, Airdrie should have been a few goals clearer.
“It was a good victory, we’re obviously delighted to get the victory,” said McCabe.
“I think when you look at the game in terms of chances created it was deserved.
“I was frustrated on another part though, because with the chances we created we’ve got to be doing a lot better.
“On another day we maybe add two or three more, and vice-versa, because Muz has a couple of great saves that keeps us in it, but we’re delighted to get the clean sheet and the win.”
McCabe added: “We knew Alloa were going to play either a three or a four at the back, so we prepared knowing we were going to get a lot of joy down the sides, and I think you could see that in the first half.
“We were getting into good areas, especially full-backs joining in, in the wider areas, and if anything it was just a little bit of quality, coming in.
“I mean, it was good, but it was almost the final touch, just being a yard short, or a little skiff – I think one flashes across the face of the goal, and on another day you’re maybe half-a-yard ahead of that and you’re getting a tap-in.
“But overall the performance was okay. It was quite pleasing, but the big thing for me is that ruthless side.
“I keep harping on about it, because I know that on another day Sammon’s header goes in, it’s 1-1, then it gets a bit nervy, the fans start getting a bit twitchy, and similar to Queen of the South you come away after such a dominant first-half performance with almost nothing from the game.
“We’ve come away, we’ve got the win and a couple of goals, but the big thing for me was obviously a clean sheet.”
Striker Lewis Jamieson was left frustrated as he again failed to find the back of the net, but was pleased that one of his efforts led to Gallagher’s clincher seven minutes from time.
McGill had already got Airdrie off the mark in 39 minutes, racing onto Craig Watson’s through-ball to smash the ball past Jay Hogarth.
But when Jamieson’s curling shot struck a post, Gallagher mopped up to seal the points ahead of a top of the table clash at Dunfermline on Saturday.
Jamieson said: “I was right behind it, I knew it wasn’t going in, and I thought it was going to go by the post.
“But it hit the post, and thankfully Gal was there to pick up the pieces.
“Over the past few weeks I have been playing well, I feel, but I can;’t get a break, in terms of trying to get on the score-sheet.
“But anything to help the lads get a victory.”
Jamieson added: “It was very good, we knew it was going to be difficult.
“Alloa are hard to break down, they like to play as well, to build it from the back, but we didn’t see that much from them, to be fair.
“They were quite direct in the way they played, but it’s good to get the victory and another clean sheet.
“Being very critical of ourselves we were disappointed with the first half, but we’re still doing all the right things. We’re still playing well, getting into attacking areas, it’s just trying to get that clinical edge that will eventually come.
“I see improvement every week. The training is intense and we need to replicate that every week, and make sure that our standards come Saturday are best they can be.
“But we go into next week again, it will be a tough game , so we’re just looking forward to it.”
