Airdrie striker Calum Gallagher played his part in a 5-0 thumping for Clyde at Broadwood yesterday and said they have been threatening to do that to a team for months.
Rhys McCabe set the Diamonds on their way with a clinical 37th-minute penalty, and would have added a spectacular second but for a flying top-corner save from Clyde keeper Neil Parry, before Callum Smith had an effort cleared off the line.
But the Diamonds sparkled in the second half, with Callum Smith, Gallagher, Kyle MacDonald and Jon Afolabi all getting on the score-sheet.
Gallagher, who netted his 15th goal of the season yesterday, says the resounding win has been coming, even as rivals .Cove Rangers clinched the title.
He said: "Clyde have caused us real problems all season and made it really challenging every time we've played them, but I think we've had a real feeling for a while that we were due a performance like that where five or six got over the line.
"It's nice to keep it going, and it's nice for the boys - I think we had five different scorers, and a few good performances and hard luck for some.
"It's good, mentally, on the day that Cove have cemented the championship that we had that type of performance to lift us, and it puts us in good stead for next week and the play-offs after that."
Gallagher got his goal when Clyde keeper Neil Parry fumbled a shot, gifting him an opportunity to control the ball and tap it into the net.
The 27-year-old former Rangers and St Mirren striker says goals like that are a running joke in the Airdrie dressing room.
He said: "I'm challenging to be top scorer in the league, so I was desperate for a goal today. Sometimes you get the rub of the green and it looks ugly, but I've always really enjoyed that type of goal.
"The boys in the changing room have a bit of a laugh about goals in training and in games being a 'Gal goal', where it hits my backside and creeps over the line or something."
Gallagher admits he's bemused that Airdrie haven't won the league this season, but says that just shows how good Cove Rangers were to clinch the title.
He said: "I think Arbroath were crowned champions a few years ago on 71 points and they ran away with the league, so it goes to show the kind of season that we've had. We were a bit unlucky not to be champions.
"But that's testament to how good Cove have been. We can only concentrate on ourselves, on our record and our winning streak is exceptional, but they're three or four games ahead of us.
"We will strive to continue that into the play-offs and even into next season, but at the end of the day they started their run earlier, unfortunately.
"It has been a very competitive season, a really enjoyable season. I think both teams potentially are the two best teams I've seen at this level for four or five years."
Airdrie finish their season at home to Peterhead on Saturday and then head into the play-offs in a strong position, but it's a hurdle they've struggled with in recent seasons.
Gallagher says he backs an on-form Diamonds to be more than a match for anybody.
He said: "Fingers crossed. I think if we were ever going to do it, now is the time.
"I think we've got really special players who are capable of breaking teams down, unlocking doors, finding ways through.
"Having the spirit to back that up mentally, as well as be tough and physical, means we've got a really great balance in the squad, a really good mentality and a really good atmosphere, going into it.
"We know that if we're at our top peak performances, I don't think that many teams will be able to cope."
