Airdrie hat-trick hero 'set the standard' for thumping win over Montrose

Airdrie hat-trick hero Lewis Jamieson says his scorching opener set the standard in their 4-0 League one win over Montrose at New Broomfield.

But the on-loan St Mirren striker says his team-mates were left feeling relieved after bagging their first league win in six attempts.

That takes the Diamonds full circle as they travel to face struggling Clyde at New Douglas Park next weekend, who they beat 5-0 at home in their last league win on September 17.

For now, the 19-year-old is just pleased to have grabbed three points for his side, with Craig Watson scoring with a header for 3-0 just before the interval.

Jamieson latched onto a crossfield ball from player-boss Rhys McCabe on the right wing, checked inside and sent a curling shot into the top left corner to open the scoring, then buried a Calum Gallagher cut-back and headed a long ball over outrushing keeper Ross Sinclair to claim the match ball.

In between goals two and three, Calum Gallagher’s flick-on from a corner was perfect for Watson to head in at the left post.

On his first goal, Jamieson said: “I made a good run in behind, stayed onside. One of the lads played a great ball – I can’t even remember who it was – and I cut back onto my left foot.

“The lads were telling me I had a bit more time than I probably thought, but I can’t really argue with the finish in fairness!

“That set the standard for the day, to be fair, and we got a clean sheet as well.

“But it was good to get the win in such an emphatic way.”

Jamieson added: “I want to do well, being her on loan to get the experience, so it’s good to get the hat-trick.

“But overall it’s a relief for the lads in the changing room, getting the win that we’ve been needing, just with the bit of pressure that has been building round about us.

“It’s a good day to get a win.

“That was our first league win in six games, and all through the week we were trying to stay positive, to make sure of the win.

“We knew if we got the win we’d be back on track, and happily today we stuck to what the gaffer said – stick to the basics and then our qualities will shine through.”

Jamieson was on loan at Clyde last season, but says that clash at Hamilton is the start of a run that could see Airdrie climb the table again after a sticky spell.

He said: “The main thing is that we got the three points, kept a clean sheet, and we move on to next week, now.

“We just need to take it game by game. It’s a tough schedule every week, it’s a tough league with good opponents, so we just need to go on again.

“It’s all about building the momentum now, after getting the first win.

“We were in a rut, and now when we get the first win we need to build that momentum and keep it going for as long as we can.”
