Airdrie goal hero Callum Smith: I didn't think it was going to be our day

Airdrie hero Callum Smith admits he mis-hit his equaliser at Falkirk, but says they all count.

Smith, 23, took his tally to six for the season as he latched onto a Calum Gallagher pass to thump the ball past Falkirk keeper Nicky Hogarth 78 minutes into a pulsating encounter at the Falkirk Stadium.

That levelled out Kai Kennedy’s 26th-minute opener, and Smith felt the point was deserved, but says he hit better shots that didn’t go in.

When asked if he thought it wasn’t going to be Airdrie’s day, with the ball just not falling for them, Smith said: “At one point, aye, because even in the first half we never really played that well, but we were still creating chances and they just weren’t going in.

“In the second half the one that I don’t catch well goes in – and that’s usually the case, to be fair – but I’m delighted with the goal.

“We’re delighted with the point, because the way the game was going, it didn’t look as if we were going to get anything out of it.

“It was quite an open game towards the last 20 minutes, and it probably could have gone either way.

“But I felt in the second half we probably had the better chances, and played the better football – but in the first half they did.

“I felt in the first half we weren’t our usual selves, but the second half was a lot more like it, getting after people, getting into the wee pockets, and getting our combinations going – it really worked well for us.”

Smith is happy with his goals tally, but wishes Airdrie didn’t have a free weekend before hosting league-leaders Dunfermline in a fortnight in what he admits is a huge game.

Ten points currently separate sixth-placed Airdrie from the Pars, and Smith said: “We can’t let them get too far in front of us, so it’s a massive game, especially at our patch.

“We need to go and take the game to them, and try our hardest to win it.”

Smith also scored to level at 2-2 in last weekend's Scottish Cup tie at Dundee, with the Championship side then winning 6-2 (John Steven)

On his own scoring prowess, Smith said: “That’s two in as many games.

“I wish we had a game next week, because I’m full of confidence and want to keep that run going, and it’s good to get the goals.

“That’s six for the season, and I’m happy with that. I think I was round about the same last season at this point, so I’ll keep chipping away at the goals.”
