Airdrie couple in festive fundraiser with Christmas lights display in garden

An Airdrie woman will light up her home tonight with a spectacular festive display that aims to raise money for the cancer charity who supported her following her mum's untimely death.

Danielle Calder will press the button to switch on the hundreds of sparkly lights and glittering ornaments on her windows, walls, trees, fences and garden as a memorium to her Christmas-loving mum, Janet McAleer.

Sadly, Janet lost her battle with cancer back in March, with the family being supported after the 66-year-old's death by Maggie's Lanarkshire.

Now, as a thank you to the cancer charity, Danielle and her husband Scott will light up their Towers Place home every evening, from 6pm to 9pm, until January with their twinkling display, whilst welcoming people to come along to and see their work and make a small donation to Maggie's.

Baker and caterer Danielle told Lanarkshire Live : "With my mum passing away this year, coupled with the crippling electricity costs, we weren't going to put the lights up in the garden this year at all.

"However, my mum absolutely adored Christmas and loved seeing the first display we put up outside our home last year, so we thought why not do it again with even more lights and figures, but this time raise some funds for Maggie's Lanarkshire too as a small token of our appreciation.

"We will hold an official switch on event tonight, Thursday, December 1 at our home in Towers Place, Airdrie, next to Caldervale High School at 6pm and we welcome people along for hotdogs, hot chocolate and homebaking before we light the place up with our festive offering.

"For those who wish to make a small donation, if they can, there will be buckets doing the rounds tonight and a secure place to make donations for anyone popping along in the coming weeks.

"We really appreciate the support."

Danielle, 36, and Scott, a senior janitor in st Margaret’s High School, will then present any donations they receive to Maggie's Lanarkshire Centre in the New Year in memory of her beloved mum.
