Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe says battle was won in midfield as Diamonds take a point

Airdrie boss Rhys McCabe told his side to control the midfield so they could win the battle and take a point from Falkirk.

Callum Smith's 78th-minute strike earned a point from the Falkirk Stadium, cancelling out Kai Kennedy's first-half goal, and McCabe was pleased with his lot overall, and reckons Airdrie could have taken all three, had they capitalised on their chances.

Callum Smith had two chances, Lewis Jamieson and Charlie Telfer also found themselves in good positions.

But McCabe says it was the midfield strength, which allowed stars like Charlie Telfer and Dean McMaster to get on the ball, that made the difference.

He said: "I thought performance-wise in the first half we were a little bit frantic. I thought we struggled with their rotation and movement in midfield especially.

"Distances from back to front were a little bit too big and that allowed them spaces and pockets for the likes of Morrison and Kennedy to come in and get in on the half-turn and really cause us some problems.

"But in that respect we never really conceded chances. Although they had a lot of the ball, they never really cut us open or created many chances.

"We said at half-time it was about getting control, especially in the middle of the pitch. Can we get our passing game going, be brave and break the lines and I think we implemented that well in the second half."

McCabe added: "In the first half we had four one-on-ones, if we take three or four of them the game's dead and buried and out of sight.

"Callum Smith goes through one on one twice, is a little bit snatchy and doesn't hit the target, when on another day he maybe scores two or three.

McCabe says Smith could have scored "two or three" goals (John Steven)

"We got the goal in the second half and, looking back on the chances we had, we're maybe a little bit unfortunate not to score a couple more.

"But we can't be too unhappy with a point. I think it was the minimal we deserved, in terms of the chances we created, the four in the first half were really good opportunities."
