Airdrie 4, Falkirk 0: Gal the Airdrie hero with gift-wrapped win over Bairns

Calum Gallagher was the hero as he drove Airdrie towards a solid home win over Falkirk at New Broomfield.

Gallagher scored twice, before subs Gabby McGill and Salim Kouider-Aissa added late strikes to send the Bairns home empty-handed.

Gallagher was twice presented with tap-ins as Falkirk failed to clear their lines, and happily accepted the gifts on both occasions.

And further poor defending saw McGill belt the ball into the net and make sure of the win, before Kouider-Aissa helped himself to a fourth in the closing stages.

Gallagher gave Airdrie the lead midway through the first half, with the Diamonds having soaked up a period of Falkirk pressure immediately beforehand.

On the hour-mark when Falkirk again failed to clear their lines from a corner, Gallagher was left with a tap-in from close range.

That said, it was Gallagher's shot being superbly tipped onto the post by sub keeper Paddy Martin that led to the goal in the first place.

Frizzell then turned provider to set up McGill to control before lobbing outrushing Martin for their third.

And when Falkirk failed to clear Rhys McCabe's free kick, Kouider-Aissa smashed the ball into the net.

Falkirk started the game well but there wasn't a lot to show for their possession and Airdrie had the better of the chances.

It was during a period of Falkirk pressure that Airdrie took the lead, with Gallagher sweeping in the rebound when Lewis Jamieson's shot had been blocked.

Falkirk, for their part, threatened mostly through Callum Morrison, but all too often he and his team-mates picked the wrong option.

In the second half Falkirk again had plenty of possession, but Airdrie took their chance when it mattered.

In truth, they never really looked to be under too much threat from Falkirk, who seemed strangely toothless up front.

Diamonds boss Rhys McCabe made two changes to the side that beat Peterhead 2-0 last Saturday, with Lewis Jamieson and Calum Gallagher coming in for Ben Wylie and Gabby McGill, who were on the bench.

His Falkirk counterpart John McGlynn also made two alterations to the side that drew 0-0 with Montrose. Craig McGuffie and Juan Alegria slotted in for Ryan Williamson and Gary Oliver.

Airdrie created the first real chance in eight minutes when Rhys McCabe's curling free kick from near the left bye-line was punched away from the near-post corner by PJ Morrison, where Callum Fordyce lurked.

Falkirk had a decent chance in 13 minutes when Callum Morrison was sent clear on the left, but his shot was blocked for a corner.

Aidan Nesbitt’s set-piece from the left was cleared off the line, with a bit of pinball taking place in the Airdrie box before it was cleared.

Falkirk should have taken the lead in 20 minutes when Alegria got the break of the ball but opted to find Morrison rather than going it alone, and Murray Johnson took his drilled shot at the second attempt.

Morrison tried his luck from distance shortly after that, but it was a comfortable catch.

From that attack, Airdrie took the lead.

Lewis Jamieson was sent through on the right and his shot was blocked by Morrison, but fell into the path of Gallagher to sweep into the net.

Falkirk went close to an equaliser in 36 minutes when Morrison's cross from the left was only partially cleared Nesbitt, but his shot flew past the right post.

Airdrie nearly doubled their lead a minute later when from a McCabe corner from the right, Adam Frizzell sent a rising shot flying over the near-post top corner from around 25 yards.

Falkirk's Finn Yeats tried his luck with a dipping effort in 39 minutes but it flew over.

Nesbitt then picked out Morrison in 42 minutes, but his curling effort was no problem for Johnson.

Justin Devenny had a shot saved early in the second half as Airdrie tried to turn the screw.

Callum Smith was sent through on goal in 51 minutes but Morrison did well to race off his line to gather.

Sub Gary Oliver tried his luck from distance in 58 minutes but it was no trouble for Johnson.

Gallagher saw his shot superbly touched onto the right post by sub keeper Martin in 60 minutes, following a sweeping move involving Jamieson and Smith.

But Airdrie scored from the corner when Falkirk failed to clear their lines and Gallagher was left with another tap-in.

Falkirk ended the game with 10 men, after Brad McKay was stretchered off in 80 minutes, with all five substitutions made.

Airdrie nearly added a third in 85 minutes when sub Gabby McGill broke clear and sent Frizzell down the left, but his shot fizzed over the face of goal and past the far post corner.

But they did add a third four minutes from time when McGill rifled home
