Airbnb users book out Ukraine properties without staying in them to support residents

In a bid to help those in Ukraine whose lives have been torn apart by war, people elsewhere have found a unique way to donate cash.

Over the week donation spots have been overwhelmed with supplies but many are pointing out that money is just as beneficial.

As people around the world watch the war unfolding hour by hour, Airbnb users are encouraging others to give money through the site.

A number of videos on TikTok have been encouraging people to book out a Ukrainian Airbnb, without the need to stay in it, in order to offer money to residents and 'help the economy'.

One user who goes by the handle ' Powerful Bytch ' tried it out and said she booked a room out in Donetsk as she "believed it was one of the first cities to be invaded by Russia".

Donetsk is the capital of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), a separatist region of eastern Ukraine.

In the video she goes on to say that she booked the room for three nights and messaged the owner, 'Hnha' to say she won't be staying in it, but if someone needs it-she will be paying for it.

Airbnb is currently waiving guest and host fees on bookings in Ukraine.

In the comments, other users are encouraging that if you are wanting to book a room, to make sure it is an independent owner as some are owned by a corporate company.

The video has since been watched 527.3k times with many commenting that they have booked a room too.

One replied: "Instead of a Honeymoon, my fiancé and I are booking an Airbnb in Ukraine just like this."

The original post shared by TikTok user 'Barbinpnw' reads: "Booked an Airbnb in Kyiv today. I checked that it was managed by one person and not by a company.

"Told them that I'm not coming but that I hope it would help a little. I want to get money directly to the people and quickly! It costs less that a typical trip to Target or Costco.

"ETA: Book the soonest available dates if possible, that helps the host get paid faster. I'm chatting with him (Dias) now. He's so grateful. He said he's using his place to house refugees at the minute. For free. So this helps him 100%".

The post adds: "Stole this idea from someone else...just booked 8 nights at $14 per night. Happy to pass on the idea for others interested in helping".

The screenshots of the post has since been shared throughout different social media platforms.

Others are suggesting to use Etsy as a way of giving money. You can filter the country of selection down to Ukraine.
