The incident involved flight AI 2812, an Airbus A320 Neo aircraft, which was scheduled to depart at 2:05 am but took off at approximately 2:15 am. Within minutes of departure, the aircraft encountered a problem and safely returned to Mumbai airport around 2:35 am.
According to officials familiar with the matter, passengers reported unusual conditions during take-off, including hearing a loud sound and noticing sparks. One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the disturbance was linked to a stall in the aircraft’s second engine. Following standard safety procedures, the pilots issued a “PAN PAN” call—used to signal an urgent but non-life-threatening situation—and initiated a return to the departure airport.
An Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident, describing it as a precautionary measure taken due to a suspected technical issue. “Flight AI2812 from Mumbai to Bengaluru on 9 April returned to Mumbai shortly after take-off in accordance with standard operating procedures. The aircraft landed safely and is undergoing detailed technical inspections,” the spokesperson said.
Airport authorities also confirmed that a local standby was declared to ensure preparedness during the aircraft’s return. The plane landed without incident, and all 47 passengers on board were reported safe.
Air India arranged an alternative aircraft for passengers, which departed for Bengaluru at approximately 4:45 am. The affected aircraft has since been grounded for further inspection.
The airline expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and reiterated that passenger safety remains its highest priority.
