People passed the police scene on their way home from shopping at the local Sainsbury's on East Prescot Road. One man said the park would usually be busy with children who are off school for the Easter holidays, adding "that's the scary part that kids go in there to play."
Several police cordons were put in place in and around the park, including at the main entrance on East Prescot Road and the back entrance next to Alder Hey Children's Hospital. A third cordon was also put in place along the loop line off East Prescot Road.
Merseyside Police said in a statement: "We can confirm that officers are currently in attendance in Knotty Ash following the recovery of a suspected air weapon.
"The weapon was forensically recovered during an open land search in Springfield Park at around 12.25pm today (Tuesday 4 April). Our enquiries are ongoing and a search of the area is currently being carried out.
