Ambulance driver airlifted to hospital after crash with car on major Scots road

An ambulance driver has been airlifted to hospital after a crash with a car on a major Scots road.

Police responded to reports of the crash on the A92 near Freuchie in Fife at around 10.30am on Tuesday, February 15.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) also deployed two appliances to the area around seven minutes later.

It is believed that an emergency helicopter descended at the location shortly after 11am, according to witnesses.

The driver of the ambulance was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital, according to the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS).

They also confirmed that were no other injuries and another ambulance was dispatched to the original call.

The road, close to the junction for Bridgend Garden Centre, was closed as a result of the incident but reopened shortly afterwards.

A Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident involving one of our vehicles on the A92 in Freuchie, Cupar at 10.30 hours today while en route to an emergency call.

"The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital. No one else was injured in the incident, and another ambulance attended the original call.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.30am on Tuesday, 15 February, police received a report of a two vehicle crash on the A92 near Freuchie, involving a car and an ambulance.

"Emergency services are at the scene and the road is currently closed.”

An SFRS spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.37am on Tuesday, February 15, to reports of a collision involving two vehicles at Bridgend Services on the A92 near Freuchie.

“Operations control immediately mobilised two appliances to the location and firefighters are working alongside emergency partners at this ongoing incident.”
