AI still falls short

Re: "Tech giants pour billions into AI, but hype doesn't always match reality", (Business, July 2).

This is an excellent read for those stuck on their mobile devices all day. It is also a good read for technocrats and policymakers in Thailand. Has anything been accomplished for the much-hyped Thailand 4.0?

Ms Hao and Mr Kruppa are right on the money that the hype about the transformative powers of the metaverse, machine learning, AI, and VR is exaggerated.

Of course, all these technologies are being sold by big businesses to make more money, nothing else. American companies, including Facebook (Meta), Google, Amazon, IBM, and Tesla, lead the way.

Now Huawei, Alibaba and a few other Chinese companies have also joined the hype about Meta, Open AI, and many other technologies. These companies seem to ignore the reality that "artificial general intelligence" is the creation of the "natural intelligence" of human beings.

There is no doubt that in the last two decades, new hardware and software solutions have enhanced the speed and processing power of the systems. Still, they can't surpass the human mind's capabilities, its power of imagination, invention, and innovation.

Veggie meat rocks

Re: "Veggie 'steak' spared the knife in France", (Life, July 28).

I was amused to read that in France you can now use the term "vegetarian steak" in your advertisements.

It was noted that "steak" doesn't necessarily refer to meat and therefore vegetarians are not guilty of misleading advertising.

One reason it took me so many years before becoming a vegetarian (I was 38 at the time) was because I loved the taste of meat.

But I found that "veggie meats" were a fantastic transition food for meat eaters who wish to become vegetarians.

One time I was in a Vietnamese restaurant where the vegetarian "chicken" tasted so much like the real thing that I asked the owner if a mistake had been made.

And it's only because the owner was a vegan Buddhist that I believed him when he assured me the "chicken" was really vegetarian. There is really no longer any excuse for eating meat.

Cunning Fox lies

Re: "Slay the fox", (PostBag, July 24).

Mr Jellison's claim that Americans watch Fox News because "the truth is there" was sadly misplaced.

Fox News recently lost two of their most highly respected news anchors in Shepard Smith and Chris Wallace. They objected to Tucker Carlson's ludicrous claim that Jan 6 was a "false flag" operation, and his infamous "white replacement" theory.

Both Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham privately pleaded for Donald Trump to call off the Capitol rioters, while simultaneously admonishing him of any guilt on their highly rated Fox News shows. Liz Cheney eviscerated Bret Baier on Sunday when he questioned her with the most recent Fox News conspiracy theories regarding the Jan 6 inquiry.

You are actually being lied to on an industrial scale.

No comparison here

Re: "Legalising sex work", (PostBag, July 27).

I appreciate that Bruno Sapienza concurs with the argument in my letter promoting the legalisation of prostitution in Thailand.

However, I made no comparison between the European and Thai prostitution industries.

Mr Sapienza may have confused me with someone else, perhaps Kuldeep Nagi, whose letter on the same topic was published two days later and does use the phrases quoted.
