AI could transform how millions of NHS patients are diagnosed

  • The UK government has announced a £20 million investment to accelerate cancer diagnoses using artificial intelligence (AI) for chest X-rays across all NHS trusts in England by 2029.
  • An additional £8 million pilot programme will explore AI's role in providing faster care for critical conditions like heart failure, strokes and lung cancer across 13 NHS organisations.
  • AI has already provided faster lung cancer diagnoses or all-clears for over four million patients, with data showing it helps radiologists analyse complex scans in four days, down from eight.
  • Health and Social Care Secretary James Murray stated that these AI tools are reducing waiting times and getting patients life-saving treatment more quickly.
  • Charities including the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and Cancer Research UK welcomed the investment, highlighting the benefits of faster diagnosis in reducing patient anxiety and improving outcomes.
