AI Boss Fires Employee for Being Late 17 Out of 23 Shifts in Bizarre but Sensible Role Reversal Incident

The unusual case highlights the growing debate over AI bosses, workplace automation and whether artificial intelligence could one day make hiring and firing decisions with little human involvement (Credit: Gabriele Malaspina/Unsplash)

An artificial intelligence manager has reportedly made its first firing decision at an experimental shop in San Francisco, dismissing a human employee after they arrived late for 17 of 23 shifts.

The unusual incident took place at Andon Market, a retail experiment operated by Andon Labs in which an AI agent named Luna is responsible for much of the business's day-to-day management. The shop has human employees, but Luna handles decisions ranging from staffing and stock selection to scheduling and operations.
