AHMEDABAD: A 23-year-old woman from Shahibaug tried to commit suicide by jumping into the Sabarmati, driven into despair by her husband’s violence. But she was spotted by passersby on the riverfront and was handed over to police. She eventually filed a complaint of domestic violence against her husband.
The woman went to the riverfront on Sunday evening and shot a video in which she said that her husband had beaten her often and had abandoned her just a fortnight after their wedding on July 19, 2021.
But before she could jump into the river, she was stopped by some people. Later, Madhavpura police registered a complaint based on her statement. She said in her FIR that she had last year fallen in love with Yogesh Dakhadia, 27, who runs an eatery in Shahibaug. She said that soon after their wedding, her husband assaulted her multiple times and finally abandoned her.
She said she made continual efforts to repair the marriage but he paid no heed to her pleas. She then went to commit suicide and recorded a video in which she said that her husband had betrayed her and had married her only to exploit her. According to police officers, Dakhadia had been married twice before. After abandoning the complainant, he began living with another woman. Dakhadia was facing the charges of rape. Provisions of the POCSO Act had also been invoked against him.
On February 25 last year, Aisha Makarani, a 23-year-old from Vatva, recorded a video in which she said that her husband tormented her. Then she plunged into the Sabarmati. In June this year, Nafisa Khohar, a 25-year-old from Vadodara, recorded a video on the Sabarmati riverfront stating that she had been cheated by a man. Then she tried to commit suicide. She was saved by swimmers and sent to her home in Vadodara where she hanged herself on June 20.
