Afternoon Update: PM raises Zomi Frankcom’s death with Herzog; Taylor urged to declare leadership intentions; and should you go commando?

Good afternoon. As Israeli president Isaac Herzog’s visit continues, Australia has joined global condemnation of his country’s plan to tighten control of the West Bank.

In question time, Anthony Albanese said – when pushed on the issue by the independent MP Zali Steggall – that he had raised the death of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom in Gaza with Herzog. The independent MP Sophie Scamps boycotted the session.

Earlier, the governor general, Sam Mostyn, described Herzog’s trip as “terribly important” to those grieving after the Bondi attack. Outside Parliament House, however, the independent senator David Pocock told a rally he thought inviting Herzog was “the wrong decision” amid ongoing community strain.

Backlash has continued over the police’s brutal tactics at a Sydney protest against Herzog on Monday, after which the Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi claimed NSW risked becoming “a violent police state”.
