After topping the box office with Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling joins Daniels' first movie since Everything Everywhere All at Once

Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary.

Ryan Gosling will star in Daniels' first movie since their multi-award-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Deadline reports that Gosling is the first cast member to be confirmed for the secretive new project from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, who swept the 2023 Oscars with their Michelle Yeoh-led absurdist multiverse comedy.

Not much is known about their new movie yet, but Kwan told Collider earlier this month that it was a "fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart. Very existential. All those things that you would hope that one of our movies would be."

Gosling is currently riding the wave of Project Hail Mary's box office success, with the highest non-sequel opening at the box office since Oppenheimer and the biggest opening of Gosling's career. The sci-fi blockbuster pulled in $80 million domestically and $141 million globally.

Based on The Martian author Andy Weir's novel of the same name, Project Hail Mary follows scientist Ryland Grace as he embarks on a one-man mission to save the Earth from an alien microbe that's destroying our sun. Alone in space, he meets an alien who he names Rocky, and an unlikely friendship blooms.

"Very few people can give you the range that he can give you in this movie," co-director Christopher Miller told GamesRadar+ about Gosling's performance as Grace. "He makes you laugh, he makes you cry, sometimes in the same scene. You are with him in every moment, even when he's not saying a word. You understand what he's going through, and he can communicate so honestly, cinematically. What a lucky thing for us."

Daniels' next movie is set to arrive in theaters on November 19, 2027. In the meantime, check out our guide to the rest of this year's biggest upcoming movies.
