In the early 1990s, small freshwater turtles became popular pets in Britain during the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles craze. But the animals sold alongside the fictional heroes did not stay small for long. Red-eared sliders and other turtles grew into demanding, long-lived pets, and some were eventually abandoned in ponds, lakes and waterways.
