After Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma wants to don the finisher's role

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rinku Sharma performed the role of a finisher with aplomb against Australia in the first T20I against Australia. He later revealed how former Indian skipper MS Dhoni’s advice to remain calm under pressure helped him take his team to a nervy two-wicket win off the last ball in Visakhapatnam. It seems southpaw Tilak Varma wants to take a cue from Rinku’s innings and don the role of a finisher in the coming games.

“I like finishing games. But I am learning from Rinku. He is doing it consistently for India. I also want to do that. And in the coming matches, I will be doing that,” promises the 23-year-old.

After hitting a couple of boundaries in his innings at Vizag, Varma attempted a big shot off a fullish widish delivery from leggie Tanveer Sangha but only managed to top edge it, and the skier was taken by Marcus Stoinis. However, the lad from Hyderabad doesn’t regret his dismissal.

“Last innings, my mindset was (clear). When the leg-spinner was bowling, I wanted to take charge as we required 10 runs per over in that situation. I have got my role in the team. So I am clear when I am batting at the No. 5 spot. I don’t have any pressure, like the expectation of doing well. If it is in my arc, I will just go for it or else, I will rotate the strike,” Varma revealed his batting approach.

He also showered praise on Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership skills and added that he doesn’t mind giving his suggestions to captains.
