Kolkata: The exemption of individual health insurance premiums from GST appears to have encouraged both wider policy adoption and higher levels of protection, with Star Health reporting an 11 per cent rise in its retail policy base and an increase in the average cover on fresh policies in the 11 months since the tax was scrapped, an official said.
The average sum insured on fresh retail health indemnity policies rose by about Rs 1.4 lakh to Rs 13.7 lakh during October 2025-August 2026, compared to the year-ago period, the insurer said.
