After a cruel winter, people in Merseyside already fear what comes next

The queue for a food pantry in Bootle will generally start to form at 7am, two-and-a-half hours before the doors officially open.

The Independence Initiative, based on Balliol Road, has been providing the service for roughly 18 months. It enables members to pay £3.50 to receive roughly £20 worth of items.

Since launching the opening time has been brought forward twice, first from 10am, then to 9.30am, due to the queues that would start to form. Now members will now be brought inside as soon as possible, offered warmth in a meeting room where tea, coffee, soup and morning TV is offered while people wait for the pantry to be stocked.
