After 9 years of acclaim for its depiction of sensitive themes, Google delists Doki Doki Literature Club for its "depiction of sensitive themes"

Best visual novel games: a close-up of Monika looking ahead with a bright light behind her during Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!.

Doki Doki Literature Club went absolutely viral almost a decade ago in part due to how it tackled touchy topics, walking a fine line between chirpy high-school-set visual novel and undercover horror nightmare. But after years of acclaim for its depiction of sensitive themes, the hit game's just been removed from the Google Play Store because of its "depiction of sensitive themes."

"Yesterday, Google decided to remove Doki Doki Literature Club from the Google Play Store," lead developer Dan Salvato and publisher Serenity Forge say in a joint statement posted to social media. "Their explanation is that the game's content violates their Terms of Service in its depiction of sensitive themes."

A statement regarding the removal of DDLC from the Google Play Store:

Doki Doki Literature Club hit both iOS and Android devices in December 2025, and is still widely available on almost every other gaming system: PC, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox included.

"DDLC is widely celebrated for portraying mental health in a way that meaningfully connects deeply with players around the world, helping them feel heard, understood, and less alone on their journey," the dev's statement continues. "Managing to achieve that – making a truly meaningful difference by using the power of fiction to connect to others – is what I'm most grateful for. It inspires me every day to keep making cool new things, things that can really reach others, especially those in need of connection."

From here, Salvato and Serenity Forge say they're "doing everything we can to find a path forward for getting DDLC reinstated on the Google Play Store." In the meantime, they're also looking into distributing the game on Android devices through other means.

"We worked hard to bring DDLC to Android, and we've gotten to see so much love and enthusiasm from passionate Android users over these past few months. Thank you so much to the community for continuing to express your love and support for DDLC through the years. We'll keep you updated on the future of DDLC for Android."

Doki Doki Literature Club's removal is at least a little baffling. The game puts out a very clear trigger warning at the start to avoid seriously upsetting anyone sensitive to depression or anxiety, it's been available for years on other platforms, and its delisting also raises questions more concerns about censorship. If mental health and suicide are problems real people deal with in the real world, then why do they need to be shoved under the carpet in games?
