Malcolm in the Middle is a show that’s tinged with nostalgia, with a devoted fan base that came of age with the sitcom. Now, two decades on from its finale, the show is back with a four episode revival that’s already garnering critical acclaim.
Running from 2000 to 2006, the show followed a dysfunctional, eccentric middle class family across seven seasons – winning seven Emmy’s in process. Malcolm, a sarcastic child prodigy, broke the fourth wall as he navigated the chaos of his home life, from his tyrannical mother Lois and well-meaning but irresponsible father Hal, to his rebellious and mischievous brothers.
Most of the cast – including Bryan Cranston, Frankie Muniz, Christopher Masterson, Jane Kaczmarek and Justin Berfield – are back, with the exception of Erik Per Sullivan who played Dewey in the original series (they’ve recast the beloved character).
My family had the full boxset, and it was the default DVD to put on at the weekends. Malcolm in the Middle holds similar sentimental value for many who grew up with the show: relatable in its madness and a masterclass in comedy, its flawed but loveable characters are some of the best ever seen on TV.
Its cult following no doubt fuelled Hulu’s revival, which streams on Disney+ in the UK. More often than not, a reboot of an adored show can make you forget why you loved the show in the first place – but with veterans from the original series returning to the writing table, I have high hopes.

Malcolm, who has happily spent decades hiding from his family, is now living contentedly with his daughter Leah and girlfriend Tristain. Malcolm’s worlds collide when his parents demand his attendance – and chaos obviously ensues. Here’s how to watch all four episodes of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.
