Despite the legendary status Capcom's Onimusha earned back in the PS2 days, the series never got its due in later console generations. Now, the series is coming back in the form of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and would you believe it? A modern third-person action game about a Japanese warrior slaying demons looks more than a little like Sekiro.
Whether Capcom's taken any direct inspiration from FromSoftware remains to be seen, but the trailer teases some large bosses and some crunchy-looking parries.
"Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes place in Kyoto during the early Edo period," Capcom explains in a press release. "In this time of relative peace for Japan, Malice has befallen the ancient city. Twisted into an eerie and unsettling place, Kyoto has been infested by the demonic Genma. In the debut trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a lone samurai armed with the Oni Gauntlet engages in fierce, blood-soaked sword fights with these hellish creatures from another world." For any further detail than that, well, we'll just have to wait.
I realize it's more than a little bit of a meme to compare games to what FromSoftware's made, but modern cultural touchstones are gonna touch stone. Frankly, given Onimusha's position in the action gaming canon, it's honestly fantastic to see two distinct lineages converge - even if just superficially - like this. Here's hoping Way of the Sword lives up to that legacy.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026.
