Afcon 2025 LIVE: South Africa join Egypt in last 16 as group stages reaches thrilling climax

South Africa survived a scare from Zimbabwe to seal their place in the 2025 Afcon knockout stages, joining Group B winners Egypt following a thrilling climax.

Bafana Bafana dominated the early stages and took a seventh-minute lead through Tshepang Moremi’s deflected strike, only for a stunning individual effort from Tawanda Maswanhise to draw Zimbabwe level.

A defensive catastrophe allowed Burnley striker Lyle Foster to re-establish South Africa’s lead before defender Aubrey Modiba fell victim to a freak own goal, once again cancelling out their lead.

But after Marvelous Nakamba’s mindless handball in the box gifted South Africa another chance to go ahead, Oswin Appollis converted from the spot to ultimately prove the difference, securing safe passage for Hugo Broos’ side.

Egypt, who had already qualified for the last 16, rested the likes of Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush for their group finale with Angola, one which ended in a goalless draw.

Report: South Africa survive Zimbabwe scare to join Egypt into Afcon knockouts

20:00 , Will Castle

A late Oswin Appollis penalty fired South Africa to a 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe and into the knockout stages at the Africa Cup of Nations.

South Africa went ahead through Tshepang Moremi's deflected shot which wrong-footed goalkeeper Washington Arubi as it looped into the net, before Zimbabwe equalised when Tawanda Maswanhise skipped past two defenders and lashed the ball home.

Lyle Foster restored the lead early in the second half with a header over the advancing Arubi, but after Ronwen Williams saved Maswanhise's effort Aubrey Modiba turned the rebound into his own net to draw Zimbabwe level again.

But seven minutes from time, when Marvelous Nakamba was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area, Appollis tucked away the spot-kick to book their passage through and send Zimbabwe home.

Here’s what went down as Group B reached its climax:

Mohamed Salah left to watch on

19:45 , Will Castle

Mohamed Salah found himself in an increasingly familiar situation as he started for the Pharaohs on the bench today - but the circumstances were of course quite different to the drama involving the winger at Liverpool.

Egypt were already through to the round of 16 and Salah, who has scored the winner in both group games for his country, has been given a rest. At least we think that’s what has happened.

FULL-TIME! Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa

17:57 , Will Castle

South Africa seal their place in the knockouts!

Zimbabwe did not make that easy for Bafana Bafana. What a climax to Group B.

FULL-TIME! Angola 0-0 Egypt

17:56 , Will Castle

It’s all over in Agadir. Egypt finish top of Group B.

Moments away from confirming South Africa’s second-place finish.

Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa

17:56 , Will Castle

90+6 mins: South Africa break after Zimbabwe lose the ball on halfway, with Nkota left on his own to sprint towards the box.

He’s smothered by the Zimbabwe body in his way, who clears and gives the Warriors maybe one more chance to attack.

Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa

17:54 , Will Castle

90+5 mins: South Africa have a corner and they’re taking their time, unsurprisingly.

Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa

17:52 , Will Castle

90+3 mins: Williams comes out to punch a dangerous Zimbabwe cross and is hurt in the process.

The Warriors are throwing everything at this.

Angola 0-0 Egypt

17:51 , Will Castle

Six minutes have been added on in Agadir.

Angola have just had a penalty appeal waved away. This is tense.

Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa

17:50 , Will Castle

90+1 mins: SEVEN minutes added on.

It’s a lot of time for Zimbabwe to do something, but if South Africa are to concede, they’d need Angola to also score in the other game to drop out of the top two.

Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa

17:49 , Will Castle

89 mins: CHANCE! A flash at goal for Zimbabwe as Maswanhise fires a volley in the box, but it’s a huge block from a South Africa body to keep the ball away from Williams’ goal.

Group B state of play

17:46 , Will Castle

Five minutes to go in both games. South Africa lead Zimbabwe, while it’s goalless between Egypt and Angola.

1st: Egypt - 7 points, +2 GD

2nd: South Africa - 6 points, +1 GD

3rd: Angola - 2 point, -1 GD

4th: Zimbabwe - 1 point, -1 GD

Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa

17:43 , Will Castle

84 mins: SAVE! The action does not let up!

Bonne breaks in behind and forces a huge stop out of Williams to prevent Zimbabwe from equalising for a third time.

GOAL! Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa (Appollis, 82')

17:41 , Will Castle

Appollis steps up... and sends the keeper the wrong way!

This time, that should be enough for Bafana Bafana.

PENALTY! Zimbabwe 2-2 South Africa

17:40 , Will Castle

81 mins: Spot-kick. Stonewall. What is Nakamba doing?

Zimbabwe 2-2 South Africa

17:40 , Will Castle

80 mins: Well, this is a huge moment.

An effort from range seems to be deflected wide by the head of Nakamba, but replays show that it comes off the arm of the Zimbabwe skipper.

The referee has been called to the monitor. South Africa are about to get a penalty.

Angola 0-0 Egypt

17:37 , Will Castle

Still goalless in Marrakesh. We picked the right game to cover.

Zimbabwe 2-2 South Africa

17:37 , Will Castle

78 mins: The chances are coming for Zimbabwe. Deliveries into the box are causing panic and South Africa are clinging on.

A reminder that Zimbabwe would leapfrog Bafana Bafana if they can pull of the win.

GOAL! Zimbabwe 2-2 South Africa (Modiba OG, 74')

17:33 , Will Castle

Talk about a live blogger’s curse! AND TALK ABOUT A FREAK OWN GOAL!

Zimbabwe break in behind and while Williams is able to save the initial shot, his block ricochets off the shoulder of Modiba and flies into his own net!

Nightmare stuff. Group B is still finely poised.

Zimbabwe 1-2 South Africa

17:32 , Will Castle

73 mins: Another change for South Africa as Foster makes way for Makgopa.

The Burnley man has an assist and a goal to his name. He may have done enough to see South Africa into the round of 16.

Zimbabwe 1-2 South Africa

17:27 , Will Castle

68 mins: Mokoena goes for the long-range spectacular and hits it well but it’s straight down the throat of Arubi. Easily saved.

Zimbabwe 1-2 South Africa

17:25 , Will Castle

64 mins: OFF THE POST! Nearly a second equaliser for Zimbabwe, and it’s Maswanhise once again!

He fires from the outside of the box but his effort hits the bottom of the far post and bounces away.

South Africa then break away in a frantic passage of play and Arubi is forced to come out to smother an inviting cross into his box.

Angola 0-0 Egypt

17:23 , Will Castle

We are past the hour mark and Egypt are still goalless with Angola.

Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush remain in reserve, but only one will be able to come on - the Pharaohs have already used four of their subs.

Even with South Africa leading, Egypt remain top of the group. That could change if Bafana Bafana run away with it in Marrakesh.

Zimbabwe 1-2 South Africa

17:18 , Will Castle

57 mins: SAVE! Arubi didn’t cover himself in glory for the goal, but he did well there to get down and deny Appollis’ snap shot.

GOAL! Zimbabwe 1-2 South Africa (Foster, 50')

17:09 , Will Castle

It’s an absolute CATASTROPHE at the back for Zimbabwe!

Lunga’s looping header back to the keeper doesn’t have enough on it to make it easy for his goalkeeper, and as Foster contests with Arubi, he heads it beyond the keeper and into the net.

You’d think in a jumping match between Foster’s head and Arubi’s fist, the goalkeeper would win. He has to do better there.

Zimbabwe 1-1 South Africa

17:08 , Will Castle

47 mins: There has been a change to make a note of for South Africa, who of course need a win to guarantee their qualification.

Sithole has been replaced by Aubaas.

BACK UNDERWAY! Zimbabwe 1-1 South Africa

17:05 , Will Castle

And we’re off again in Marrakesh.

Here come the teams

HALF-TIME! Zimbabwe 1-1 South Africa

16:50 , Will Castle

It’s all square at the break in Marrakesh - and talk about a half of two halves!

South Africa dominated the early stages and took the lead through a freak deflected goal that came from Moremi’s shot.

However, Zimbabwe pegged them back on 19 minutes through a fantastic solo effort by Maswanhise and have arguably been the better team since.

Egypt’s clash with Angola is goalless at the break.

Zimbabwe 1-1 South Africa

16:46 , Will Castle

45+1 mins: Three minutes added on in Marrakesh.

Angola 0-0 Egypt

16:45 , Will Castle

Angola with their best chance of the game!

It’s a sensational one-two with Mabululu that sets Banza away, but with just the goalkeeper to beat he fires wide.

Angola have been the better of the two sides - can they capitalise on Egypt’s mass-rotation?

Half-time is approaching in both Group B games.

Zimbabwe 1-1 South Africa

16:42 , Will Castle

40 mins: Mbule stings the gloves of Arubi with a wicked dipping shot - the Zimbabwe goalkeeper does well to read the flight of the ball and get a goal-saving hand to it.

Angola 0-0 Egypt

16:41 , Will Castle

Another half-chance for Angola as Mabululu sees his effort from the centre of the box is scuffed and collected by Shobeir. This comes after Benu missed a header from the right side of the six-yard box.

The chances are coming, just no goals yet in Agadir.

Zimbabwe 1-1 South Africa

16:37 , Will Castle

36 mins: After what has been a bit of scare from Zimbabwe, South Africa are trying to regain control of this game.

A corner is whipped in for Bafana Bafana that causes pinball panic in the Warriors box, but it’s eventually cleared.

This one has slowed down a tad after a frantic first 20 minutes.

Zimbabwe 1-1 South Africa

16:31 , Will Castle

29 mins: CHANCE! It’s another massive chance that comes Zimbabwe’s way!

Fabisch whips a free-kick onto the head of Garananga at the back post, who is unmarked, but the defender can’t get his effort on target from close range.

A huge let off for Bafana Bafana.

Angola 0-0 Egypt

16:24 , Will Castle

Egypt’s turn to have a big opportunity at breaking the deadlock as a Pharaohs head meets a stunning bicycle-kick cross, but the effort goes well over.

GOAL! Zimbabwe 1-1 South Africa (Maswanhise, 19')

16:20 , Will Castle

WOW! It’s individual brilliance from Maswanhise and Zimbabwe have produced a goal out of nothing!

He sends his first man with the cut-back before dancing past two more green shirts and firing into the far corner.

Zimbabwe are level - a spanner in the works for Bafana Bafana!

Zimbabwe 0-1 South Africa

16:17 , Will Castle

16 mins: CHANCE! Golden opportunity for South Africa to double their lead as an unmarked Sithole meets the cross at the back post but can only head over.

Angola 0-0 Egypt

16:13 , Will Castle

It’s goalless after 10 minutes in Agadir but Angola just had a golden chance to break the deadlock.

Gaspar runs onto a dangerous low cross in the centre of the box but gets under the shot, firing high and wide.

GOAL! Zimbabwe 0-1 South Africa (Moremi, 7')

16:09 , Will Castle

The perfect start for South Africa!

Bafana Bafana comes forward again and as Moremi shoots goalwards, it takes a wicked deflection off Lunga and bounces fortuitously over the goalkeeper before hitting the net.

Just like in yesterday’s clash between Cameroon and Ivory Coast, it’s a freak goal that makes the difference.

Zimbabwe 0-0 South Africa

16:07 , Will Castle

6 mins: SAVE! A strong hand from Arubi denies the snap-shot of Appollis!

The Zimbabwe stopper gets down really well and produces a smart stop, just preventing the ball from getting over the line.

Zimbabwe 0-0 South Africa

16:02 , Will Castle

1 min: Early opening for South Africa as it’s worked to Mbule, who dribbles into the box before shooting wide.

Bright start by Bafana Bafana.

KICK-OFF! Zimbabwe 0-0 South Africa

Why has the Africa Cup of Nations taken place over Christmas?

15:40 , Will Castle

The Africa Cup of Nations kicked off in Morocco on Sunday 21 December, with the final at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat to be played on Sunday 18 January - far earlier than when held at this time of the calendar than in previous years.

The 35th edition of the biennial tournament was initially set to be played in July and August 2025, in order to reduce disruption with the European football season.

But the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations is, once again, a talking point - which is unfair to the tournament itself as it becomes squeezed by club football’s endless expansion.

The Africa Cup of Nations was moved to begin in December in order to make room for the expanded Club World Cup, which featured 32 teams for the first time and took place in the United States between June and July earlier this year.

On the other side, the conclusion of the new Champions League league phase in January, which features an additional two matches, forced an earlier start to Afcon and for the tournament to be played over Christmas and the New Year period for the first time.

Why is the Africa Cup of Nations taking place over Christmas?

What other games are on today?

15:28 , Will Castle

Elsewhere at Afcon today, Group A will reach its climax in the later kick-offs.

Fourth-place Comoros face second-place Mali, with the former knowing they’ll need a win to have any chance of qualifying for the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Zambia clash with tournament hosts and group leaders Morocco, who are one of the favourites to win the entire competition.

Both games kick off at 7pm GMT.

Mohamed Salah dropped for Egypt

15:24 , Will Castle

Cue gasps.

Mohamed Salah finds himself in an increasingly familiar situation as he starts for the Pharaohs on the bench today - but the circumstances are of course quite different to the drama involving the winger at Liverpool.

Egypt are through to the round of 16 and Salah, who has scored the winner in both group games for his country, has been given a rest. At least we think that’s what has happened.

Maybe we’ll see him in the mixed zone later...

Key Afcon dates

15:19 , Will Castle

While progression is the main priority for three of the four teams competing today, Afcon contenders Egypt and South Africa will surely have an eye towards the latter stages of the competition as they looked to lift the elusive golden trophy.

Sunday 4 January and Monday 5 January will be when the Pharaohs and potentially two other Group B teams play their round of 16 ties, beginning the knockout phase of their Afcon campaign.

That’ll culminate on Sunday 18 January, when Rabat hosts the Afcon final at Morocco’s newly-renovated Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah.

We’ll have confirmed team news from both of today’s games anytime from 3pm, so stay tuned!

Angola vs Egypt: Players to watch

14:54 , Will Castle

Afcon’s most successful side Egypt are already into the knockouts but will be looking for an assured performance against Angola to ensure top spot.

The Pharaohs boast some of the best attacking players on the continent, with Liverpool superstar and captain Mohamed Salah their poster boy. He has already proved the difference in both games so far, coming up with a late winner against Zimbabwe before scoring the decisive penalty against South Africa. He is supported by Omar Marmoush of Manchester City in a blockbuster attack, while former Aston Villa winger Trezeguet can also do damage.

Lyon defender Clinton Mata is Angola’s prized commodity and will be tasked with thwarting Egypt’s powerful front line this afternoon. Up top, Gelson Dala is in fine scoring form after his goal against Zimbabwe, now joint-third with Manucho in the country’s all-time scoring ranks.

Zimbabwe vs South Africa: Players to watch

14:45 , Will Castle

South Africa are in their best period for over a decade and are staring down the barrel of their first World Cup in 15 years next summer, having not competed at the tournament’s finals since hosting in 2010.

Burnley striker Lyle Foster has been Bafana Bafana’s dangerman in recent times and despite a quiet outing against Egypt, he will be the man to watch against Zimbabwe. Vice-captain Teboho Mokoena, who starred for Mamelodi Sundowns at the Club World Cup last summer, will meanwhile look to control midfield.

Zimbabwe will lean on the leadership of their captain Marvelous Nakamba, who has Premier League experience under his belt at Aston Villa and Luton Town. Knowledge Musona will also have a spring in his step after moving joint-second with Adam Ndlovu in the nation’s all-time scoring chart with his equaliser against Angola. One of their more notable names, Wolves man Marshall Munetsi, was omitted from the Warriors’ Afcon squad over an injury - something that has been disputed by the player.

When Group B's heavyweights met

14:32 , Will Castle

Egypt took control of Group B when the Pharaohs met South Africa last time out, with Mohamed Salah’s first-half penalty propelling 10-man Egypt to a 1-0 win over South Africa.

The result saw them become the first team into the knockout stages of the competition, leaving Bafana Bafana in a precarious position going into the third group game.

Here’s how it went down:

Last night: Ivory Coast and Cameroon share spoils in clash of Afcon heavyweights after freak own goal

14:20 , Will Castle

Manchester United's Amad Diallo was on target but Cameroon hit back to hold Ivory Coast to a 1-1 draw in their Africa Cup of Nations clash in Marrakesh.

Amad put Ivory Coast ahead after 51 minutes of the Group F encounter when he raced onto a long ball from deep and curled in a shot from the edge of the area.

The lead lasted just five minutes as Junior Tchamadeu's shot took a wicked deflection off Ghislain Konan and looped into the net.

Here’s a full rundown of yesterday’s action:

What is the state of play in Group B?

14:08 , Will Castle

It’s all still to play for in Group B.

The game to watch will be between Zimbabwe and South Africa. Bafana Bafana are in second place on three points and still have work to do to ensure their place in the round of 16, knowing a win guarantees progression.

Zimbabwe aren’t out of this yet, however, and could leapfrog South Africa with a shock win of their own. With a point to their name, they’re in the same spot as Angola, who will need to beat seven-time winners Egypt and hope Zimbabwe draw with South Africa to leap into the top two.

Egypt have already booked their ticket into the knockouts after Mohamed Salah’s penalty helped them beat South Africa last time out, but top spot is not yet secured. Should Bafana Bafana rack up the goals against Zimbabwe and Egypt lose, they’ll top the group and get a more favourable draw.

Here’s how Group B looks going into the third and final matchday:

1st: Egypt - 6 points, +2 GD

2nd: South Africa - 3 points, 0 GD

3rd: Angola - 1 point, -1 GD

4th: Zimbabwe - 1 point, -1 GD

When are today's matches in Group B?

13:42 , Will Castle

Both contests kick off at 4pm GMT, with Angola vs Egypt held at the Stade d’Agadir while Zimbabwe vs South Africa takes place at the Stade de Marrakech.

Afcon 2025 LIVE!

13:30 , Will Castle

South Africa will look to seal their place in the Africa Cup of Nations knockout stage as they take on Zimbabwe in their Group B decider, while Mohamed Salah is in action for group leaders Egypt in their clash with Angola.

Bafana Bafana still have work to do after a Salah penalty proved the difference in their last outing against Egypt, a win which ensured the Pharaohs' place in the round of 16.

Currently on three points, South Africa will need a win against Zimbabwe to guarantee the continuation of their 2025 Afcon journey. But with Zimbabwe going into the match on one point after drawing with Angola, the Warriors could pull off one of the early shocks of the tournament by sending a tournament favourite packing.

Salah’s Egypt will be in action at the same time as the clash in Marrakesh, with the eight-time winners hoping to hold off Angola in their bid to keep top spot.
