Aer Lingus apologises after Belfast passengers hit by flight cancellations

Aer Lingus has issued an apology to customers after a number of flights were cancelled over the weekend.

Customers were hit by flight cancellations out of Belfast, Dublin and London Heathrow on Sunday.

In a statement, the airline blamed pressures from strikes and ongoing issues at airports for the cancellations, adding the situation has been compounded by a spike of Covid-19 cases among its own teams in recent days.

In a statement issued, Aer Lingus said: "Aer Lingus anticipated the return of demand for travel once Covid restrictions were removed and built appropriate buffers into our plans in order to deal with a reasonable level of additional disruption.

"This weekend, system pressures from ATC strikes, and ongoing issues at airports and among third party suppliers have regrettably necessitated the cancellation of some flights.

"This pressure on the system has been compounded by a spike in Covid cases among our own teams in the last number of days. Where cancellations have occurred, Aer Lingus has sought to re-accommodate disrupted passengers on the next available alternative service.

"Aer Lingus wishes to apologise to those customers that have been impacted, and has shared detail regarding customers’ rights the airlines’ obligations under Regulation (EC) 261/2004 which can be found here: www.aerlingus.com/support/legal/regulation."

It comes as Dublin Airport had its busiest weekend of the year after over 50,000 passengers passed through its doors, with numbers expected to remain similar throughout the summer months.

Following huge delays earlier this year, which saw over 1,000 people miss flights, the Dublin Airport Authority has once again run into some difficulties.

The DAA said passengers faced delays at check-in and bag drop areas on Sunday due to "staffing challenges" facing airlines throughout Europe.

However, it said security queues were moving well during the busy period.
