Big-hearted residents and businesses across Airdrie & Shotts are being asked to donate advent calendars throughout this month to be donated to youngsters across the two towns.
Anum Qaisar, the constituency MP, has teamed up with four local good causes to distribute the donations in time for December’s Christmas countdown to spread some festive cheer.
The festive treats can be handed in at her office each Friday until November 25, and will then be handed out by Airdrie foodbank, Diamonds in the Community, Airdrie school uniform bank and Shotts-based Paul’s Parcels.
Ms Qaisar launched the collection drive in response to the cost of living crisis, saying: “As prices continue to skyrocket, households across the constituency are unfortunately preparing for a challenging festive period.
“I receive regular correspondence from families across the constituency who are worried about the cost of Christmas and providing things such as advent calendars for their children [which] is too often taken for granted.”
“[People] are facing severe financial pressure as a result of a rising cost of living and are having to make difficult decisions between basic necessities as a result; this will unfortunately see many children go without presents and simple joys of Christmas.”
The Airdrie & Shotts MP highlighted the 10 per cent inflation rate which she says means “many families will be facing tough choices this winter”, plus a YouGov survey suggesting that more than three-quarter of parents with children under 18 have concerns over its impact on their holiday shopping.
She has written to supermarkets and local businesses asking for their support with the advent calendar drive and added: “I am asking the community to come together and participate; Christmas is not only about the presents we give and receive, but what we can do to help others in their time of need.”
Ms Qaisar added of the good causes working with her on the project: “These organisations provide my constituents who are struggling with a lifeline, and I cannot thank the volunteers enough for their unwavering hard work and agreeing to be part of this.
“It’s my hope that by putting together this advent calendar drive and working with local businesses and charities, we are able to restore some festive cheer for some who may find this festive period particularly challenging.”
Advent calendars can be handed in to Ms Qaisar’s office at 2 East High Street in Airdrie on Fridays between 10am and 2pm until November 25.
