Adored comedy follows in Friends’ footsteps by leaving Netflix US, and fans are devastated

Netflix has announced that one of its most beloved series is leaving the platform in the U.S. at the end of June, leaving subscribers heartbroken and threatening to delete their accounts.

“It’s a show? It’s a lifestyle. It’s a religion,” the streamer wrote Monday on X.

“We are sorry to say that Gilmore Girls Seasons 1-7 will be leaving Netflix in the US on June 30. Raising a cup of coffee to every fan who visited Stars Hollow with us.”

The early 2000s family drama — centered on the tight-knit bond between a young mother, Lorelei (Lauren Graham), and her teenage daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel) — has been a Netflix staple since the streamer acquired the licensing rights for all seven seasons in 2014.

Despite concluding in 2007, the series became an enduring hit for the platform, with viewership steadily growing over the years, especially in the autumn months. In the fall of 2023, viewership spiked to 7.98 billion minutes, according to Nielsen data.

In fact, its early success on the streamer led to a greenlight for a four-episode sequel in 2016, titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The Netflix exclusive four-part revival, which welcomed back a majority of the original cast, including Bledel, Graham, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Keiko Agena and Milo Ventimiglia, will remain on the streamer.

Netflix’s loss of Gilmore Girls comes more than five years after it bid farewell to similarly adored classic Friends, which left the platform in the U.S. in 2020.

Swathes of fans have expressed their disappointment on X.

“Crazy to be removing a show that brings most of your viewership in,” one wrote.

“This is personal, Netflix. Bring it back or I’m out,” a second commented, while a third questioned: “Why do you want to enrage this fan base? Where they lead we will follow!”

“Literally deleting my Netflix account, this show is the only reason I have one,” a fourth insisted.

“Why is it whenever I start watching something you decide to remove it! Honestly disappointed you removed Friends now this. Honestly don’t see the point in the service anymore!” another ranted.

“Nooooooo how am I supposed to fall asleep without my comfort show playing in the background,” one asked, as a second begged: “This is the saddest news!!! Please change your mind.”

“This is a bold move and extremely disappointing,” another said, noting, “but just so everyone knows it’s still on @hulu.”

Gilmore Girls is leaving Netflix on June 30. However, it will still be available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
