Anthony Albanese has insisted Australia will not be deploying troops to the Middle East after announcing the defence force would send a specialist surveillance aircraft and stocks of air-to-air missiles to the United Arab Emirates.
Labor is also toughening immigration laws to stop people travelling to Australia on some temporary visas and seeking to stay permanently because of the Middle East war. It comes after five members of the Iranian women’s football team were offered humanitarian visas, as the clock ticks on the offer of asylum to the rest of the team ahead of their scheduled return home.
Donald Trump had earlier delivered a vague and contradictory forecast for how long the United States will continue to fight in Iran and what the ultimate goal of the US military campaign there will be. “We have won in many ways,” he said during a speech to Republican allies. “But we haven’t won enough.”
