Already a bitter rivalry in the AFL, the latest feud between the two South Australian clubs is brewing ahead of their maiden AFLW clash.

The first women's Port Adelaide-Adelaide Showdown will mark the unfolding of a new cross-town rivalry on Friday night with both teams desperate to win.

"Only one gets to be on top," Crows coach Matthew Clarke told reporters on Thursday.

"In the end, it doesn't really matter who is the favourite (to win)."

The defending champion Crows sit second on the ladder, only behind the Brisbane Lions on percentage, and have three premierships to their name.

Port appear the obvious underdogs, sitting in 14th position with only one win in their debut season, but Clarke expects the game to go to the wire.

And the stakes are perhaps higher with former Crows premiership players Erin Phillips, Ange Foley and Justine Mules facing their old side for the first time.

"We're well aware of their talent," Clarke said.

"They'll be doing everything they can to get their team over the line.

"Chels (Randall, Crows captain) plays everywhere. They'll cross paths."

Port Adelaide coach Lauren Arnell has no doubts the game will be epic and remains unfazed, with the Power emerging as one of the competitions most aggressive clubs.

Despite having only played five AFLW games, they sit second to flag favourites Brisbane in tackles.

"We control what we control," Arnell told reporters.

"We focus on our footy tomorrow night.

"It's widely known that our brand of footy has been really hot contest. We'll bring that."

Both coaches are expecting a big turn out for an unmissable moment in AFLW history at Adelaide Oval, with Clarke saying it will be a celebration and chance for players to write their own stories.
