Adding WR Mike Williams would be a bad move for the Browns

While he is not cut yet, wide receiver Mike Williams has been a popular 2024 NFL free agency target for the Cleveland Browns.

It’s crazy to think that free agency is just a week away as teams will start with the legal tampering period Monday in hopes of fixing some roster holes. The Browns and general manager Andrew Berry will look to add to the wide receiver and insider Mary Kay Cabot has listed Williams as a possible option.

“The Chargers can save $20 million by cutting him. If they do, the Browns would likely be intrigued. He’s turning 30 in October, but still has plenty left in the tank, and has natural chemistry with Watson, which is something he could really use.”

I understand the appeal of his chemistry with Watson but they haven’t played together in a long time so that point doesn’t hold much weight. The bottom line is that Williams has struggled to stay healthy lately and is the dynamic big-play threat they are missing.

Williams is a big strong wide receiver who can make difficult catches in traffic but the Browns already have Amari Cooper and Cedric Tillman and I would much rather save the money and roll with those two.

Cleveland needs to diversify the wide receiver room not adding another player with a similar skillset to what they already have for more money than he is worth. In his seven seasons, Williams has only gone over 1,000 yards twice, maybe if he’s cheap but it just isn’t the move that makes the most sense.
