Adam Wingard, the director attached to the live-action ThunderCats movie, has provided an update on the project after three years of development. The ThunderCats franchise, based on the animated show of the same name, follows a team of cat-like humanoid aliens defending Third Earth from the villainous Mutants. Development on the movie has been ongoing at Warner Bros. for over a decade, with Wingard joining as director and co-writer in early 2021.
Wingard recently confirmed in an interview that the ThunderCats project is still active. He mentioned that he and his collaborator had completed a script draft before focusing on other projects, but they are now actively working on it again. Despite his involvement in expanding the Monsterverse with Godzilla vs. Kong, Wingard expressed that ThunderCats is a top priority for him.
While concerns may arise due to Wingard's involvement in multiple projects, including a Face/Off sequel and a Hardcore adaptation, his dedication to ThunderCats is evident. The comparison to the struggles faced by the Masters of the Universe movie, which has also seen delays, highlights the challenges of bringing beloved '80s franchises to the big screen.
Despite the prolonged development period, Wingard's commitment and Warner Bros.' backing suggest that the ThunderCats reboot may be closer to realization than ever before. Fans can revisit the original ThunderCats series and its 2011 revival on Hulu while awaiting further updates on the live-action adaptation.
Thundercats, originating in 1985, features a team of cat-like aliens created by Tobin 'Ted' Wolf. The franchise has expanded beyond the TV show to include toys, video games, comics, and additional TV series over the years.
