Adam Thomas shares beaming behind-the-scenes Waterloo Road snap as filming begins

Adam Thomas has shared a behind-the-scenes snap as filming finally gets underway on Waterloo Road.

The former Emmerdale star is reprising his role as Donte Charles on the hit BBC One drama, which was axed from TV screens six years ago.

In September last year, it was announced that a long-awaited new series was in the works, and Adam shared his excitement while on set over the weekend.

Posting a snap of him holding a script and smiling at the camera, the 33-year-old was overjoyed to be back.

“This still doesn’t feel real!! Reading through the first ep of @waterlooroad again and again and again!!” he wrote.

“To all the new and old Waterloo road fans you are all in for a treat! Finally got to meet all of the cast and what a talented and friendly bunch they are!!” Adam added.

“Something so special about this series already and we haven’t even started…” he teased.

As well as Adam reprising his role as Donte, it was also announced his on-screen girlfriend Chlo Grainger, played by Katie Griffiths, would be returning.

Angela Griffin, who played pastoral teacher Kim Campbell, is making a comeback, and her character is reportedly the new headteacher.

The official Instagram page for Waterloo Road shared Adam’s picture, prompting hundreds of delighted fans to share their excitement over the upcoming new series.

“So excited for this! Hope you guys are back for good,” one wrote.

“I'm so excited......been watching all the old episodes,” a happy viewer added, as one commented: “Who else watched every single season in lockdown number 1. I’m sooooo happy Waterloo Road is coming back on.”

“This makes me so so happy,” one wrote, as another demanded a lengthier return for Waterloo Road.

“I cannot wait for this again.. I absolutely love Waterloo Road back... Always re watching it.. so excited for the new series! I hope they do more afterwards too & it's not just a one off!” they wrote.

The BBC One drama first hit TV screens in 2006, and was set in the town of Rochdale for seven series, with famous faces including Chelsee Healey, Denise Welch, Gemma Atkinson, Lisa Riley, Katie McGlynn, and Tina O'Brien all appearing in the show.

For series eight, Waterloo Road relocated to Scotland, until it was axed in 2015.

Back in September last year, BBC bosses confirmed it was returning, and said that the show would explore “post-Covid Britain”.

“Waterloo Road is the perfect lens through which to explore post-Covid Britain, from the perspective of those who have arguably been affected most: young people in education,” Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama, said.
